Anaesthesia (Malay: Bius/Anestesia) originated from the Greek word anaisthēsia, meaning an- ‘without’ dan aisthēsis ‘sensation’. Its translation in Malay, Bius originated from the Persian word bīhūshī (بیهوشی) meaning bereft of self consciousness. Anaesthesia is given to patients to enable operation and other procedures to be done in a painless manner.

Generally, anaesthesia can be categorised into 2 types: General Anesthesia and Regional Anaesthesia.

General Anaesthesia is when the patient is rendered unconscious during operation. The patient is given anaesthetic drugs through the veins and/or inhaled anaesthetic gas. A breathing tube is inserted through the respiratory tract and connected to an anaesthetic machine. After the operation, the patient will be woken up and the breathing tube is removed. The patient is then monitored in the recovery bay for 30 minutes before being discharged to ward.

Regional Anaesthesia is when anaesthetic drug is given to anaesthetize a certain body part for operation. Patient is usually awake during the operation, however will not feel anything at the body part being operated on. There are many regional anaesthesia techniques that can be done, such as spinal, epidural or combination of both techniques; or peripheral nerve block by numbing only a certain part of the body such as a leg or hand. After the anaesthetic wears off, the sensation will return to normal.
